Massachusetts Medical Society is incorporated.
November 1, 1781
It holds its first meeting at the Suffolk County Court House on November 28, 1781. The first major medical society in the U.S. and the oldest “with a record of uninterrupted meetings from its foundation to the present,” it is later described by Henry Viets as being notable for being “formed of both Loyalists and Patriots . . . before the surrender of Yorktown.” Its first president is Edward Holyoke, despite the fact that he never attends a meeting of the society. Its headquarters are today located in Waltham.
